The violinist and president of the Kazakh National University of Arts Aiman Mussakajayeva may be dubbed the ambassador of Aram Khachaturian’s music — the composer himself gave her his blessing. He wrote, “Aiman, you will be a great violinist” on the sheet music of his Violin Concerto, and his words came true. Khachaturian’s Violin Concerto in D minor to be performed at the gala concert celebrating his 115th anniversary is Ms. Mussakajayeva’s calling card. “This piece has always been with me, but my attitude to this music changed over the years”, said Aiman Mussakajayeva. “First, I learned the history of the Armenian people, heard folk motifs that sound in the Concerto’s third movement, they are never fails to engage the audience, it’s so fiery, I play it very fast, and everybody is amazed how that is possible”.
The Armenian State Symphony Orchestra is the official orchestra in residence of the Malta International Music Festival. This is a great honour for the musicians and at the same time this is a rare chance of bringing two ancient cultures and civilizations – Armenia and Malta – together. Sergey Smbatyan, the founder, artistic director and principal conductor of the State Symphony Orchestra of Armenia is a 30-years old musician capable to lead people wherever needed. That’s why they eagerly respond to any of his appeals – be it a musical Klondike trodden through and through or cherished terra incognita. “The 12-year-long history of the State Symphonic (formerly, the Youth) orchestra of Armenia is obvious proof that classic – and it means true – art always wins”, said Sergey Smbatyan. “With regard to our greatest composer Aram Khachaturian, his legacy is universal, that’s why all of us should carry this legacy, disseminate and promote it”.
